assignment: borders


Objective:
•To work with some of the many brushes within Adobe Photoshop
•To explore techniques that will be used in the professional world
•To explore the text function within Adobe Photoshop
(all strokes should be on its own layer for ability to edit)

Online Class Turn In:
3 files  .JPG
•Stroked Border (border 1)
•Painted border (border 2)
•Border + Text (that gallery print look) (border 3)
•Size file 2160 pixels longest side 240ppi, 8Bit
••Remember to save your files as .psd files. This is your master file. You are turning in The saved files as .JPG (You will have 2 files saved)

Classroom Turn IN:

PRINTED
•Stroked Border (border 1)
•Painted border (border 2)
•Border + Text (that gallery print look) (border 3)

•All images must be retouched, color corrected and be dynamic engaging photographs. Yes, composition, content, style are a factor in grading.
•The text and stroked border should not fight with the image. Black is a solid
choice for the text and stroke color.

1) Open Image
2) Make a selection of the image.
Menu – Image – All (Command A) -PC Control A
3) Create a new blank (transparent) layer, all strokes should be on their own layer.
3) Menu – Edit – Stroke

•Choose your Width, Color of the Stroke
•Location, Inside.
What happens if you choose Outside?
•Leave the Blending modes set to the defaults.
•Click OK
Below, Notice how the simple stroke contains the image from bleeding into the white of the page.

First we will Extend our Canvas (add a white or transparent canvas outside your image) Extended Canvas https://youtu.be/zWcI50LIKeY
1) Open an image
2) Menu – Image – Canvas Size
•Check Relative
•Add 2-4 inches to your Height and Width
•Anchor in the Center
•Canvas Extension Color?
Advanced Tip:
Before you go to Canvas Size in your image double click on the background Layer this will unlock the layer for magic later.
•Canvas Extensin Color will no longer be an option. Your canvas will expand with transparency as your extension.

Tech2
1) Open an image
2) If you are using a mac Click the “F” key to move to full frame.
3) Click on crop tool. Drag crop to the edge of your image, release, then click and drag the crop outside of image boundry, into the gray area.
4) Once desired canvas is added double click inside box or
click the check in the options bar.

1) Open photo
2) Extend canvas (give the image a white border) Use the advanced tip above for transparency.

-STROKE
3) Select the image (marquee)
•If you have transparency around the image, Command Click on the layer with the image, you will then have a selection around your image.
•If the image and background are one,
try the magic wand on the white canvas,
then select inverse
4) Create a new blank layer to put the stroke on
5) Edit – Stroke
6) Create a new blank layer to put the 2nd stroke on
7) Bring up the rulers -Command “R” or Menu -View – Rulers
8) Drag out guides, to add the 2nd stroke
9) In the Menu – View – Snap (the marquee tool will then jump and grab the guides making your selection easier)
10) Use the marquee tool to draw out selection to the guides. Did it snap?
11) Edit – Stroke

TEXT
12) Drag another guide to center of the image: vertically
13) Add text on top of the stroked outer border.
(choose: center paragraph, text size, black text, font)
-place text cursor on the center guide, type title, etc

UN-STROKE TEXT
14) Make the stroke layer active.
(the layer with the line going through the text)
15) Use marquee tool to select stroke, line going through the text
(drag box around text and line)
16) Select inverse, Menu – Select – Inverse
17) On the stroke layer add a layer mask (the line is gone)
-If you forgot to inverse the marquee
and the only line you see is going through the text,
invert the mask command “I”

-View – Clear Guides
To hide guides or reveal existing guides
-View – Show – Guides or Command “;”

not a plain border, A PAINTED BORDER
I Love this look and making these borders. the artistry to make it look appropriate to the image is an exploration of back and forth. revealing and hiding or just giving a hint of the image. You can make or create your own brushes to refine the look you are going for.

1) Open an image
2) Click the new layer icon
3) Fill the new layer with white
4) Click Layer mask icon
5) Check to see you are working
on the layer mask
5) Choose the brush tool
-Go to Options bar
-Click downward facing triangle
-Next to the current brush size
-Click the right facing triangle (this allows you to pick a new brush set)
-Choose thick heavy brushes (Click Append, this will add to your current brush set)
•Play with different brushes and brush sets
6) Paint with black on the layer Mask to reveal image below
(this is a layer mask, if you made a brush stroke you didn’t like, change the brush color to white and paint it away)
(the image is revealed with a cool edge, changes with each stroke) feel free play and experiment see what happens.
8) Remember to leave white edges (the new border)
•Do not define the original edge of your Image
9) Save or Save As
If you like the painted image and want to reproduce it on additional images
-Hold the Shift Key and Drag the painted mask to the next Image
-(NEW IMAGE MUST BE THE SAME SIZE )
-Holding the shift key will drop the layer centered on the image

1) Open an Image
2) Extend the Canvas
3) New Transparent Layer
4) Use one of those cool rough brushes you found. Hand Paint a Border around your Image. If you do not like your line use the Eraser Tool to remove and alter the line. Dance back and forth between your Paint Brush and Eraser to make a cool edgy border.
