Kristen Hansen: The Ten

January 23, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

This semester I am asking friends, photographers, artists, creative people to contribute a list of Ten things related to photography, art, inspiration, techniques, you know, things that motivate them. Here is our 1st list from Kristen Hansen.

  1. https://www.creativelive.com - If there's one thing I know, it's that you should never stop learning. This site has tons of classes - some free and some you pay for - and a huge catalog of topics from inspiration to technique to business. The classes are taught by major industry professionals. It's an essential tool.
  2. http://www.wired.com/category/rawfile - This site is my go-to for seeing new innovative photo projects from all types of artists - commercial photographers, photojournalists, and fine art.
  3. http://www.thisiscolossal.com - This is a true art blog, with photography, design, and anything visual. Their posts are more imagery and minimal copy, and any type of creative would appreciate the site.
  4. http://www.jasminestarblog.com - Jasmine Star is one of the most popular names in wedding photography, and has become a major resource for other photographers who are starting their own businesses. Her blog is full of useful business tips, photo ideas and personal stories of owning a photography business.
  5. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/reviews.htm  - The reviews on this page are astoundingly thorough. I always check his review before I buy a new piece of equipment.
  6. https://fstoppers.com  - Great mix of art projects, product reviews, editorial pieces from industry photographers and more. It's an all inclusive professional photographer's blog.
  7. http://www.stylemepretty.com - This blog is one of the most exclusive wedding blogs out there. Although it's made for consumers, it definitely helps me keep up on trends in my industry, what brides are looking for these days, and best of all - pose and shot ideas.
  8. http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com - Although I'm not a photojournalist myself, I love a good story. This blog is filled with the images images that have graced the pages of the NY Times and other photo-journalistic projects, old and new.
  9. http://petapixel.com - Another blog with a good mix of inspirational projects, gear reviews, tutorials and more. A good resource for any type of photographer.
  10. http://www.iheartfaces.com - This site includes portrait editing tutorials, photo contests, giveaways, equipment reviews and portrait inspiration. Some of the tutorials could be a bit basic for the advanced photographer, but it's still a good resource for portrait makers at any level.
  11. http://proof.nationalgeographic.com - For me and many other photographers, our first love of imagery started with seeing our parents' issues of National Geographic as kids. Since I also have a passion for travel and travel photography, this blog is inspiring and beautiful, and has great stories along with the images.
