Shooting:

Shoot 2 sets of images using the Target (white, gray, black card, found in the back of the Kelby book)

•set 1 available light outdoors, do not use on camera flash
•set 2 available light indoors use a tripod if necessary, this could be photographed in the studio if you have the experience, do not use on camera flash

Remember:
1) do not have any reflection or glare on the card.
2) both image 1, with card, and image 2, without card, must be the exact same exposure.
3) shoot one image with card, and the second, same image without card.
4) do not shoot a lesser resolution for the card shot. This will effect the results

Photoshop:

•Download images to the computer
•Open Photoshop
•Open two images, one with and one without the card
•Open the info panel, make sure it is visible
•Create an Adjustment Layer - Levels (DO NOT USE ADJUSTMENTS THAT ARE EMBEDDED INTO THE FILE. THIS IS A DESTRUCTIVE WORKFLOW. YOU WILL NOT HAVE OPTIONS IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND AS TO HOW SOMETHING SHOULD LOOK.••• USE ADJUSTMENT LAYERS)

•Click on the highlight eyedropper in the levels adjustment panel. It is now highlighted and active.
•In the image click on the white square (notice a color change in the image?)
(You are setting a known neutral value to the white. This will help to rid any color casts from lighting when the image was shot)

•Click on the midtone eyedropper in the levels adjustment panel. It is now highlighted and active.
•In the image click on the gray square
•Now you have a color neutralized image. Whites are whiter, colors are more saturated, and brightness and contrast are improved.

•If needed, you may want to drag the shadow slider to the right finding the point of black in the image

(Sometimes all you need is the white eyedropper. Sometimes white and black. Sometimes only the midtone eyedropper. The purpose is to neutralize the color cast. This is the goal we are working towards with this project.) Experiment and play. Remember not to lose your shadow or highlight detail. Many times the black eyedropper will alter the contrast too greatly.

Your white eye dropper should be set R245, G245, B245
Your midtone eye dropper should be set R133, G133, B133
Your black eye dropper should be set R7, G7, B7

-Drag the Levels Adjustment layer to the Image without the card. (if you shot many images under the same lighting conditions, one adjustment will work for all)

•Size your before correcting, and after correcting images to
800px on the longest side, 72ppi (size your images after you correct them)

Save your layered .psd or tiff files, then Save As for your .jpg.
You will have your full camera sized layered images as well as your flattened smaller .jpgs for online

TITLEING INFO: please name files: Last name_First initial_project.extension
(ex) protz_h_Wcard1.jpg (image with card, uncorrected)

•Upload to flickr the before and after images. you will be uploading 4 images. then place your images in the project group.

Please upload the files when looking on flickr in the order, no correction, correction, no correctiom, correction. After uploading to flickr create a Set to place the images in order, then add to the group.
