•••Print this page as your weekly semester guide•••
As opportunities arise, I reserve the right to alter the order and to add to or subtract
from this syllabus or weekly semester guide.

This course will introduce students to the basic Adobe Photoshop
techniques such as layers, layer masks, color correction and retouching
directed specifically to how it applies to photography will be
explored. We will be using digital camera
images. This course can be taken in the same semester as PHO 170.
The student must be familiar with computer navigation, saving files
and burning to a CD, DVD or Hard drive.

Create ZIP compressed files from within the OS (basically, this shrinks the file size, ideal for files you’re going to email — smaller file sizes mean faster file transfers). To create a compressed file, either Control-click on the file and choose Create Archive (which is Apple-speak for “make a compressed ZIP file”). Or you can click on a file, then go to the Action menu (the button that looks like a gear up in the Finder window’s toolbar), and choose Create Archive from there. Either way, it quickly creates a new file, with the file extension “.zip.” This is the compressed file. You can also compress several different files (like three, for example) into one single archive file — just Command-click (or Shift-click contiguous files) on all the files you want included, then choose Create Archive of X Items from the Action menu. A file will be created named “Archive.zip” (that’s it!). By the way, if someone sends you a ZIP file, don’t sweat it — just double-click it and Tiger will automatically decompress it

Shooting Assignment: raw or jpg, unprocessed images.
- You could try shooting both a raw and .jpg set to color correct.
-You will be color correcting these images in part 2 of color correction coming up, just shoot the images so they are ready to go when you need them.
-Shoot 2 sets of images using the Target (white, gray, black card, found in the back of the Kelby book)

set 1 available light outdoors, do not use on camera flash
set 2 available light indoors use a tripod if necessary, this could be photographed in the studio if you have the experience, do not use on camera flash

Remember:
1) do not have any reflection or glare on the card.
2) both image 1, with card, and image 2, without card, must be the exact same exposure.
3) shoot one image with card, and the second, same image without card.

Kelby book page 217 (the concept)

QPcard 101 is a reference card targeted for professional photographers. It has three
patches with white, gray and black colors. The spectral respons of the three colors is
almost perfect straight, meaning there will be no problems with metamerism at all.
The colors are extremely fade resistant. The main purpose with the card is to use the
gray patch for neutral gray balancing of the image. The gray patch is reflecting 18 %
of the light, making it useful also for exposure purposes. There is a millimeter reference
scale on the card.

Spring Break March 14-21, 2010

Hi gang, have a great safe spring break.

This week is a good time to shoot a few portrait images. We will be focusing on the face for the portrait assignment. So the face should be the focus of the image. It can be a studio shot or an available light shot. Shoot a boy or man and another image of a girl or woman.
Shoot something fresh this week...

assignment/how to:  Portrait Due thursday April 29th
upload to http://projects.pixelnrg.com/index.php

Portrait
A  portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A  portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.

Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery http://www.npg.si.edu/

eye contact
explore your composition, use the rule of thirds, do not center your subject in every frame.
move in close, fill the frame with the face of your subject.
move away and use the room to reveal who the subject is.
what are the hands doing? use the hands to direct the eyes. movement around the frame.
Black and white? its digital.
red eye... bounce your flash.
use available light when possible.
avoid backlit scenes.
don’t have the subject looking into the sun. they will squint at you.
